I think that the rogue line is added to the interfaces file if you use
the Manual Configuration option that Network Manager presents (more
specifically the window that opens when you hit "Configure Interface" in
the Manual Configuration application, and which lets you directly
specify an ESSID to connect to). If you remove said ESSID from said
window it doesn't remove the line. The presence of this line then causes
NM to (deliberately?) fail to present a list of wireless networks in the
system tray menu. This seems like odd behaviour - the NM manual
configuration app is effectively disabling a major feature of NM!
