The same problem keeps popping up in kubuntu's latest version.

ive encountered it with kubuntu 8.04 (kde 3.5.9)
and kubuntu 8.10 (kde 4.1)

Trying to fix screen resolution i ran startx as root from logging in
from  console mode (not starting kde at splash screen).

After trying to log in as common user from splash screen i got
.ICEauthority error again.
