[Bug 243616] [NEW] KDE4.1 - no longer starts

I was running KDE4.1 beta2 reasonably well. I wanted more bling, so I
installed xserver-xgl (believing that that would enable desktop effects)
and kdeplasmoids (hoping I'd get more widgets). After restarting KDE4, I
just got a white screen, so I decided to reinstall kde. I completely
removed kde4 (and all kde4 packages) and then reinstalled kubuntu-kde4.
Now KDE4 starts up, but gets stuck on the first icon in the splash. The
.kde4 directory gets created, but only to a certain point:
