Same problem for me also

Dell 1520
Ubuntu 8.04, Kernel 2.6.24-16,
Core 2 Duo 2 GHz, 2 GB Ram

Nvidia 8600GT 256MB

Had problems with screen resolution but fixed that in recovery mode.
