This is still present in Gutsy.  It seems clear that ALSA isn't going to
be fixed, so it's time we think about hacking around it.

The Gnome volume control app should manually set the device to muted
when turned all the way down, rather than just setting the volume to 0.


What's very curious about this is you can get some weird behavior.  Open up a movie in totem, then turn your system volume to 0.  You'll still hear sound.  But, strangely, that sound will then get quieter when you lower the totem volume, even though in theory everything should be "muted."
