I can't remember what I did to 'fix' this one, but I managed to find a
work-around. I think dpkg-reconfigure may have been involved, but could
be wrong.
The other thing may be down to groups memberships: plugdev springs to
mind.

FWIW, I have desktop icons (at the moment) on my gutsy desktop: so long
as I remember to mount stuff in /media/ (I really don't like that, I
tend to mount things elsewhere, historically, now I mount in /media, and
symlink out)
I think it's a bit harsh to say "useless", but I really don't think
bug-reports are the best place for flame-wars...
