I'm a dev, and I still cant reproduce this with my msn account.

Does the problem go away if you first select another status, then select
online?  I've occasionally had that - that it will just go grey if i try
to hit online straight away - but not in a while.

It sounds like a config issue, if removing ~/.kde/apps/share/kopete
fixes it.  as for why it comes back, I dont know.
