After reading, I think I am reporting a duplicate of the "Adept couldn't
open APT database" bug, confirmed and critical here:

I hope my info is of some help.

In closing, I can confirm that aptitude will run, install/uninstall from
the command line. I logged on to the console instead of the GUI, opened
aptitude, and used it to install some programs - ABI word processor,
Kubuntu restricted extras, nvidia-glx, and tuxcart. Upon boot to GUI,
Adept still broken. Again, hope this helps.
