I can confirm this problem:

$ python
Python 2.5.1 (r251:54863, May  2 2007, 16:56:35)
[GCC 4.1.2 (Ubuntu 4.1.2-0ubuntu4)] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> from PyQt4 import QtCore, QtGui
>>> [str(x) for x in QtGui.QImageReader.supportedImageFormats()]
['bmp', 'pbm', 'png', 'pgm', 'ppm', 'xbm', 'xpm']

No JPEG support visible, as well as documentation mentions that JPEG support
is available, and the file
/usr/lib/qt4/plugins/imageformats/libqjpeg.so
exists.

No further idea what might be the reason.
