In my machines - I setup the connection using usb: - which is what causes the hanging. It seems that this is a know problem in KDE 3.5.6 and has been fixed in KDE 3.5.7. I have since installed KDE 3.5.7 from kubuntu.org and the problem has been fixed.
This hanging problem only occurs if you use usb: as the connection.
