I'm using 3.5.6, the version shipped with Feisty, and I don't think the
answer to this problem should be 'move to a third party version of KDE'-
what's Kubuntu for?

Anyway, this bug is a duplicate, so you can close it. I finally found
the proper report, here: Bug #94480.

Here's hoping for a backport.
