[Bug 77058] Re: GCC Cannot Build Executables

I ran into this same error when trying to build just about any package in an out-of-the-box install of Xubuntu 6.10 with all updates as of Jan 30, 2007. It appears that by default the required packages are not installed in Xubuntu, maybe all Ubuntu distros?

As a workaround, try installing the "build-essentials" package using
Synaptic or the apt-get command. It got me past this particular problem.
