I have the same problem with my Brother HL-1430 via USB on Gnome.

dmesg gives following

[11252.232000] usb 5-1.4: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 7
[11252.324000] usb 5-1.4: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
[11252.324000] drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 7 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x04F9 pid 0x001A


But printer-manager does not find the device :(
