aronchi: interesting - it is very similar problem as the related debian bug. Can you provide the following info:
- output of "id" command
- output of "cat /var/lib/acpi-support/*-*"

Does setting the brightness sliders in config dialog of powermanager
works? Are there also some messages reported on console when changing
the slider?

My patch should help (at least for notification popup issue), but I
think also sebas proposal to add additional try/except around brightness
code might not be bad either.
