Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdepim

I'm on Kubuntu Edgy, freshly dist-upgraded. Many incoming messages with
French accentuated carachters are displayed as little squares in Kmail.
Some other French messages are displayed fine however. I guess it's a
UTF-8/ISO-8859 compatibility issue. To my understanding, Kubuntu is
configured by default to use UTF-8 locales. I didn't try to modify or
play with this configuration, but my litttle Google search indicates me
that setting the system to ISO-8859 could solve the problem, but would
certainly not be an acceptable solution considering that UTF-8 is
supposed to be the encoding of choice now.

But then, what would be the solution if we want to maintain the UTF-8
settings?

Thanks for your attention.
