I can confirm that this is a problem with Ubuntu Edgy.
I have Amarok 1.4.4 running with MySQL on Fedora Core 6 (Zod) and it scans my (fairly large) collection just fine. However, I have shared the music files via a samba share on the Ubuntu box, with the same logical file structure (/home/music), with several subdirectories beneath.
I have set up a different MySQL database on the Ubuntu box as I had heard of some issues with scanning from two different boxes updating the same database.
In short ... scanning the collection works wine with FC6 .... exact same collection bombs with Ubuntu.
