The problem just happened to me while upgrading an Asus laptop to Gutsy,
with X set to use the Vesa driver.

I strongly disagree with the bug being marked as "invalid" as well - X
is running perfectly well on its own an all applications launched
independently work, therefore the problem is really specific to KDM and
not a configuration issue.
