Scott, You guessed right I am on AMD64 architecture and that obviously
was the problem, the latest set of updates cured everything.

Thank you for your time and thank you for this excellent distro,
although Gutsy is supposed to be just a development version it is more
stable than a lot of other final releases, it is a brilliant piece of
work, so hats off to yourself and all the other developers/maintainers.
