Hi Hans,
Yes, this poor resolution detection is a known issue. I've written up a
bunch more info about this issue on bug #3731 about why it happens and
how to work around it, and will mark this a duplicate of that one.
I would love it if you could identify anything unusual about your setup
and add it to bug 3731 - such as if you use any adapters for your
monitor connection, if the monitor uses DVI rather than VGA connectors,
or anything else. This could help in narrowing down when this bug
happens.
