There is a related problem with upgrading. I upgraded from dapper via
edgy to feisty. After the upgrade to edgy the splash screen did not
display and my HP vs17x monitor complained about the settings. However,
the login sreen displayed OK in my default 1024x768 resolution.
Upgrading to feisty made no difference. The work around was to add a
vga= parameter in GRUB. By the way, I checked my Xorg configuration and
it was unchanged from dapper. I notice that the slash screen has changed
- just a progress bar instead of a scrolling list of boot tasks.
