I updated several packages today in my Feisty Beta (64-bit), and the problem seems to be solved.
Now I can run k3b as a normal user, and it does not freeze.

Between the upgraded packages, there was kernel version 2.6.20-14
(linux-image-2.6.20-14-generic_2.6.20-14.22_amd64.deb, linux-restricted-
modules, etc), which solved the problem, I think.
