You don't have to change your root password.

The administrator for all these cases is someone with sudo privileges
(the one user that was created first). If you are the first user, then
your password is what you should enter, not the root password.

This might not be a failure, but a misunderstanding of how things should
work. If this clears it up, please let us know.
