This is still a problem with up-to-date Edgy. The current session loads
the devices as normal (perhaps luck of the draw, perhaps not), but the
other session still tries to load them. It fails, so it mounts a CD
read-only and shows my USB stick as an ordinary folder on the desktop.

Weird.
