Nowadays I don't see this problem with edgy, my versions are:

kmail 3.5.5-0ubuntu1
libqt3-mt 3.3.6-3ubuntu3
scim 1.4.4-4ubuntu6
skim (no longer use)

I am OK to close this bug report if the problem can't be traced any
further.
