Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: kcontrol
the KDM login dialog shows up in the correct resolution which means that
X is configured properly.
When I login as my user the resolution switches to 640x480.
When I select kcontrol->display and set the resolution manually or use
krandrtray to switch to the resolution I want things work just fine : resolution is switched.
When I log back out and back in the resolution is back to 640x480.
After some searching I found a file in .kde/share/config called
startupconfig. That file contains kcmrandrc options for screens. In my
file there are two definitions (screen0 and screen1). Kinfocenter ->
X-Server shows X only knows about one screen (#0)
The resolution specified for section screen1 matches the resolution I
get when I log in (I tried setting the value manually and indeed loggin
in selects the requested resolution).
So I think that somebody in KDE (who ?) responsible for selecting the
screen resolution select - wrongly - screen1 where it should take
screen0
