seems like the true reason for this problem was related to the fact that
my ext3 partition was 98% full and somehow that made some of my mail
folders go bye-bye. BAD enough! Don't know who to blame here, ext3 or
kmail or a combination of both.

However, I am pretty sure I will go with XFS in the future!
