The icon itself
1) stays after an upgrade (even though there are no updates available)
2) reappears after loging out (without icon) and loging back in again (when I first reported the bug it appeared only after restarting Dapper)
3) vanishes after updating your source-repositories (be it with "apt-get update" or unsing synaptic or adept)

The icon's tooltip always says: No updates available (and there actually are none), unless I update my repos and then it shows the correct amount of updates (or vanishes).

I remember that around Flight 5 the notifier showed a green ball to say, that the system was up to date. Now I haven't seen that one for a long time. Only the update warning-triangle (now with the fiery whatsoever around it).
