Font handling was "fixed" in Kubuntu and you see this as a side-effect. In your case, display size is probably not properly detected and this results in some predefined DPI (75) to be used. You should not fix DPI with -dpi option, but rather help X to set Display size correctly. This is described at the end of this page:

When you have set your display size correctly, you will have DPI right -> now adjust fonts to your liking. Now font pt size should look the same on 75 DPI as well as on 147 DPI display.
Font size between 9-10 should look OK.
