I've got the same problem using Kubuntu 6.06.  Everything works fin
until I install the restricted nvidia drivers for 3D support.  Initially
I followed the instructions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia.  As soon as
I restarted the xserver I went from login screen, to black screen back
to login screen.

I then tried using this method:

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`
sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup
sudo nvidia-xconfig

This appeared to work, but gave me a fixed screen resolution of
1400x1050 (my monitors maximum resolution is 1152x768)  As soon as I
edited the xorg.conf file with the correct resolutions and restarted, I
got the same error.

I'm using a samsung centrino laptop with a NVIDIA FX G0 5200 64MB
variation 1Gb RAM, 1.6GHz centrino processor.  xorg.conf file below:
