I'm having a similar problem with a Dell SX260 running 6.06 final.  This
machine features a Intel  82845G and I can only get 640x480.  As per the
comment above, I ran xresprobe and it IS getting the parameters from the
monitor.

The problem (I'm virtually certain) is that the driver seems to be
unaware of available system memory and is consequently running on less
than 1MB of RAM.  I tried adding a VideoRAM 32000 parameter, but this
prevented the xserver from even starting.

Not really sure how to proceed, except quite baffled that no one else
has reported this problem.  Surely there must be other people trying to
use 82845G video!
