[Bug 49344] [Dapper/Edgy] amaroK 1.4 refuses to play any playlist; just skips through

Binary package hint: amarok-xine

When I try to play any set of files (and I have got libxine-extracodecs
installed), amaroK just skips through the list until the end, producing
lots of HD activity but no sound output. It is as if the amarok-xine
engine is failing to play the tracks, however xine-ui plays them
perfectly. I am using the packages from the http://kubuntu.org/packages
/amarok-latest repository.
