I use GDM and I have the same bug.

For me, "ati" driver does not work, and "vesa" lockup at the startup .
Only "fglrx" can start and seems to work fine , but it can not stop ... 
Restart gdm, restart computer, shutdown, switch to console mode ... => all actions that stop X lockup my system.

I have tried "AlwaysRestartServer=true" but It does not work .
