fair enough, having worked in IT myself, i should know better and always
get the error message, but there is little that can be done once the
problem occurs, except reinstall an OS (i tried heaps of stuff to try
and resurect it). But if no one told the developers, then if it were a
problem nothing would be done about it.

If you cannot give more info, I'll have to close this bug. Dapper is still a development release and things may break. Without info nothing can be fixed.

Michael Vogt has created a dist-upgrade tool that will help upgrading
across releases so in Dapper final this should go much smoother.
