I have the same problem on Dapper Beta (upgraded from Breezy/Warty). The Kubuntu default KUBUNTU_splashscreen_blue_neon_logo_03.xpm.gz doesn't work. fiesta.xpm.gz works, though. 

KUBUNTU_splashscreen_blue_neon_logo_03.xpm.gz has some strange characters left to the copyright comment in the first few lines of the gunzipped xpm. I deleted them, but to no avail.

No LVM here. Maybe our grub is too old for this file? Although adept tells me that my grub is uptodate, I doubt that the upgrade process has re-installed grub to the MBR.
