Public bug reported:

Affects: kubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)
       Severity: Normal
       Priority: (none set)
         Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
I have a fairly standard dapper ubuntu install. I decided to to install
kubuntu-desktop to have a look (looks nice btw). However, doing so
caused the gnome default setup (Human theme, etc.) to be largely
hijacked by the default kubuntu one, including icons, widgets and menu
highlights. Konqueror is now the default browser, etc. Some apps like
Firefox and Nautilus are affected but others like Synaptic are not.

So I understand that kubuntu-desktop is a meta-package that not only
installs the kubuntu software but also sets the various kubuntu artwork
defaults. The 'right thing to do' might have been to install various KDE
applications directly without installing kubuntu-desktop, but the latter
is the easiest and many people will do just that.

FYI, I also tried to change the display settings while in kubuntu but
subsequently replaced xorg.conf with an older copy.
