Eventually it occurred 100% of the time when switching mailbox. However, I just discovered that the command: mv /home/john/.kde/share/apps/kmail/mail/.*index* ~/mail.bak/ appears to have fixed the problem. -- KMail 1.9.1 crashes when selecting folders https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/28362
