Note that the darla24 (and other Echoaudio chipsets) driver _is_ available in the alsa-source tarball in Ubuntu's universe. John-Paul, you may use the instructions in /usr/share/doc/alsa-source/README.Debian to generate an installable package (.deb) for your current linux-headers-$(uname -r).
A bit of background: Upstream ALSA devs maintain alsa-driver and alsa-kernel branches in CVS. The former contains drivers for more chipsets than what's included with the kernel proper (Linux 2.6, and thus, Ubuntu's kernels), which syncs with alsa-kernel. Debian's/Ubuntu's alsa-driver source package (which generates the alsa-source binary package) mirrors upstream ALSA's alsa-driver tarball. When ALSA developers feel that a driver exclusively in the alsa-driver branch is mature enough to migrate to the alsa-kernel branch, they do so. Currently the Echoaudio drivers remain solely in the alsa-driver branch, so I am disinclined to think that supporting them is wise for Dapper.
