This happened to me before using another distro.  It turned out to be artsd-related.  There, the menu entry started xmms via "soundwrapper xmms", but it worked fine from the command line.  Here the menu entry doesn't seem to do any such thing.  Does anything interesting appear on the console if you start xmms from the command line?
