After this occurs, I cannot play audio.  
To repair, I can:
1.  Quit Amarok (typically running in the system tray at all times).  
2. Killall artsd (usually already quit)
3. start artsd (artsd &)
4. restart amarok

Just for reference, amarok is set to use the "arts engine".
