My keyboard layout is standard US keyboard.
My password is set by my employer and is stored in /etc/passwd (not supposed to be shadowed) as standard ascii characters (letters and numbers)
this system was upgraded from Hoary. The password is updated about every 3-6 months.
Sudo does in fact work fine.
Yes, k-menu lock screen also gets stuck.

I also tried enabling lock/blank screen by setting the option to place the mouse in the upper-right-hand corner. I thought this might be it, but I disabled
this and it makes no difference (because that is something I recently changed). Of course the other significant change recently is an upgrade from Hoary.
