Summary: Konqueror Toolbar misbehaviour
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: amd64
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: kubuntu-default-settings
AssignedTo: debzilla at ubuntu.com
ReportedBy: chris at deadhand.com
QAContact: kubuntu-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com
Tested a breezy Live-CD from 08/09/05.
When Konqueror is started as a web browser the "Kubuntu Web" profile is used. This one has been
simplified and sports a less cluttered toolbar (only navigational buttons). The file-manager profile
seems to be unmodified default.
The issue is that when opening a file:/ (or the like...) url in this konqueror it won't change it's
view to something better suited for file-management.
It's not possible to do this manually either, since the view profile management entries are removed
from the context menus - it's only possible to "save Kubuntu Web", but not to load another.
The issue is important due to the way Kubuntu handles newly opened konqueror "windows". Clicking e.g.
"home" will open it in any currently opened konqueror instance as a new tab. Somethimes this running
instance is a web-browsing konqueror and the new tab will inherit it's view profile (well, it won't
*change* it for the new content).
I'd suggest to simplyfy the file-management profile as well - the "Printer" icon can definitely go and
"Enlarge/Shrink Icons" could be removed as well I think. Only element that would be really needed for
file-management additionally to all the navigational buttons (including stop, inlike sometimes
suggested) would be the two buttons to change
between Icon and List Views. And those should only be loaded when no web page is viewed.
Further optimization might require some work at Konqueror's code I assume. The Reload and Stop buttons
could be made into one and the buttons Enlarge/Shrink Icons, Icon-View, List-Views and maybe additional
views like Image View (currently on main toolbar in Kubuntu) could all fit into one slim "View" button
- removing at least 4 buttons from the toolbar.
This might look like this:
Tree View *
------------------
Icon View
Multi Column View
------------------
(Image View)
(other views here)
------------------
Enlarge Icons
Shrink Icons
The other List Views are a bit redundant; Detailed List View is just marginally simpler Tree View; Text
View is for geeks and fits well in the normal "View" -> "View Mode" context menu ;)
That's propably beyond the scope of Kubuntu though, so ignore what doesn't apply here please...
