------- Additional Comments From cjwatson at ubuntu.com 2005-09-04 20:48 UTC -------
Ubuntu's runlevels do not work this way; that runlevel layout comes from Red Hat
and its (many) derivatives. To stop kdm, issue /etc/init.d/kdm stop; to make it
never start in the first place, 'chmod -x /etc/init.d/kdm' (or remove the kdm
package, or various other options); to temporarily boot without X in order to
fix things that are impeding proper use of the system, use the 'recovery mode'
entry in GRUB.
