I have tried installing Kubuntu Breezy preview (daily build 20050902).   
Xorg version in it is: 6.8.2-56. 
My graphics card is Nvidia Geforce FX 5200. 
Monitor is Sony CPD-E400E. 
 
During installation I was presented with resolutions up to 1024x768, so I chose manually also 1280x1024. 
It works fine on Suse with refresh rate 88Hz, so it is supported by monitor. 
 
After booting, xserver started but the screen was blank. I could switch to text consoles, but switching to vt7 
always gave me blank screen and monitor entered power saving mode. 
 
I run dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and this time chose resolutions up to 1024x768 and then it started OK, but 
the refresh rate was only 75Hz.
