No, however I do have:  
"/home/john/.local/share/applications/Mandrakelinux/Multimedia/Graphics/kuickshow.desktop".  
Removing this file causes the JPEG to be opened with Gwenview (which works). 
 
Apparently this problem will only occur if sharing a home directory with e.g. Mandrake.
