I have a network here at home that is mixed...3-4 winboxes and 3 Linux. Two of
the Linux boxes are mostly file servers. My main Linux box is the one that I
have the samba shares on.
I originally set these up simply by installing and configuring samba first. This
involved the following:
1) apt-get and installing: samba, samba-common, and smbfs
2) Creating a samba password for other systems to access using smbpasswd -a
3) Creating a smbusers file for this by sudo gedit /etc/samba/smbusers and
adding the name/password.
4) Editing the samba config file (smb.conf) to allow access from an external
user (creating public file areas.
5) Creating a public folder under home called public (/home/public)
6) Then, I created mount points for the shares: sudo mkdir /media/<share name>
and chmodded it.
7) Edited the fstab to include this on bootup.
8) Created a desktop icon by linking to an NFS device = share name defined in
the fstab.
