On further investigation the behaviour seems to be related to the groups
allocated to my user account (jfd1) by nis
If the +::: at the end of /etc/group is removed the problem goes away.
The additional groups currently allocated by nis (don't ask why) are: 
-- this set are the linux group names - they have different names on the nis
server - a problem to be fixed...
