Ubuntu (kubuntu) | kdm

           Summary: KDM starts too early
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: amd64
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Keywords: kubuntu
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: kdm
        AssignedTo: debzilla at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: kayhayen at gmx.de
         QAContact: kubuntu-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

Recently in Kubuntu the priority of kdm was changed to 13, making it start very early in the boot process.

This improvement lead to a bug on my amd64 kubuntu. The colors of KDE were
very reduced, like only 256 colors, already in kdm, and in KDE after login.

Logging out and in again, cured the problem.
Not starting kdm at boot, but manually later, cured the problem.

Nothing in log files, xdpyinfo, etc indicated a difference.

Going to /etc/rc*.d and moving S13kdm to S21kdm cured the problem.

What I see is that I do have this sequence now:

lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root 17 Feb 28 02:46 S05vbesave -> ../init.d/vbesave
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root 18 May 29  2004 S10sysklogd -> ../init.d/sysklogd

lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root 17 Feb 28 02:17 S20postfix -> ../init.d/postfix
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root 19 Feb 28 03:31 S20powernowd -> ../init.d/powernowd
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root 17 May 29  2004 S20privoxy -> ../init.d/privoxy
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root 15 Feb 28 03:31 S20rsync -> ../init.d/rsync
lrwxr-xr-x  1 root root 13 Nov 12 23:50 S20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 13 Mar 25 20:50 S21kdm -> ../init.d/kdm

Thanks in advance. I recommend to check out if xorg somehow needs
acpid or powernowd or makedev to run before.

I am willing to conduct tests as you need, please tell me what to do.

One last note about my system, this was a Debian cross-graded with apt
to Kubuntu. No problems due to that.
