Summary: KDEInit could not launch 'xterm'.
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: kde
        AssignedTo: debzilla at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: rruohone at cc.hut.fi
         QAContact: kubuntu-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

I'm using up-to-date, freshly installed Ubuntu (Hoary, apt-get update + apt-get
upgrade does nothing as of 1.7.05) with kubuntu-desktop installed.

I added xterm to the KDE system menu (where "Terminal" is), copying fields from
the entry for Terminal, except changing name to "xterm" and command to "xterm
&". It launches without problems from the menu. I also defined a shortcut key
for it, Win+X. (this works fine for Terminal, but not for xterm) If I launch
xterm using the shortcut, it launches OK, but a dialog box saying "KDEInit could
not launch '/bin/sh'." pops up. Yes, it works, but the dialog box is still annoying,
as it pops up every time I start a new xterm (and maybe same for other
non-gnome, non-kde tools?).

If I set the command to "xterm" (so it doesn't use the shell), it won't work
well at all. I guess the system expects the launch command to return
immediately. It starts the xterm, and a dialog box saying "KDEInit could not
launch 'xterm'." pops up after I quit it. If I try to launch another xterm
while the first is running, it won't show up and KDE grabs the keyboard so that
only mouse works until I've closed the xterm (I guess the shortcut key handler
grabs the keyboard and gets stuck waiting for the previous xterm to finish
before launching a new one). This isn't very user-friendly way of handling the
situation, though! Also, even ctrl+alt+f1 doesn't work while the keyboard is
grabbed, and I think *that* shouldn't happen no matter what (I'm not sure if
it's KDE bug and X bug, or only an X bug).
