OK, perhaps kate is consuming excessive memory; if you are able to kill kate, do
you notice a great deal of swap space being utilized?  Can you add a swap space
/ memory utilization monitor to your panel, to see if that is what is happening
when you experience the problem?  Can you provide an example file which exhibits
the problem?
