No, this happens even when I have no CD in the drive and no external devices
connected.

However, I just remembered something which explains why kded is dying when I
suspend my laptop. It seems that kded exits if hald is killed, and I modified
the apm scripts on my system to automatically stop dbus-1 before suspending and
restart it after resuming. I made this change because the laptop absolutely
will not "wake" (resume) if hald is running. See:
https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1940#c20

I guess until bug #1940 is fixed, I will just have to restart kded whenever I
resume from "sleep".
